Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best age to begin lessons?

With the Suzuki Method, young children can begin to learn many elements of music.  Ideally, a child expresses interest in learning to play.  Children begin with learning rhythms, songs, motions, and some who are very young can begin by playing on their own handmade box violin!  Once patterns are established, a child will be ready to begin playing a violin with confidence and good form.

That being said, it's NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN!  I love teaching my adult students!  They are an inspiration to me and show me how possible it is to learn and grow new talents at any age!  I am happy to focus on what adults want most, while also guiding them to music which helps develop specific techniques to improve their playing.

How do I know what size violin to rent or purchase?

Rent or Buy?  Rental violins are well used, with little incentive to maintain them.  Bows often need to be rehaired.  The Book Table rents violins.  These are okay for starting the violin.  However, developing tone is very important, so the sooner a student has a violin that can produce a nicer tone, the sooner the student can successfully develop a good tone. There are violins available on Facebook Marketplace, but if you want a professional in the mix, Day Music in Murray, Utah has a payment program to own violins that can be returned and given a larger size for the equivalent value of the smaller violin.

What size violin is needed? When your child comes to lessons, we can evaluate which size is best for him or her to begin.  Generally when the violin is under the child's chin, he/she should be able to easily wrap his/her hand around the scroll (other end) with only a slight bend with the arm.

What if my child becomes interested in another instrument later on?

Because lessons are focused on many elements of music, if your child decides to choose a different instrument later on, much of the knowledge and many of the skills learned will readily apply.  There are many benefits to introducing music at an early age.

What is my role as a parent?

Parents who attend their child's music lessons and play a supportive role at home see the most progress in their children.  Staying positive is critical, and incentives for practice are encouraged.  Teaching a child to to become self-reliant in his or her practice as soon as possible is the goal, though this is a process that can take several years.  I use additional on-line sources that parents often find helpful, but must access for their child. It is understood that music is a type of language, and the more it is heard, the more "fluent" we become, particularly with children.  I encourage classical and other genres of music be played as much as possible in the home.

Am I too old to learn?

Learning an instrument later in life is a challenge, but one that has the potential to breathe new life into our souls and fulfill an unmet lifelong desire.  I believe the best chance for success is by having a teacher who can focus on correct technique from the beginning, before poor habits are developed which either lead to poor performance or the frustration of re-learning.  I encourage adults to begin with private lessons before or in conjunction with learning in a group setting for greater confidence, satisfaction and results.

"Talent is not inborn, it has to be created."

"If, as a person works at playing the violin well, he develops the talent to overcome any difficult problem by working, then the talent will be born to accomplish even th hardest problems easily.  As a person practices the violin, he creates this talent."
